Why is PVC used in yoga mats?

PVC is lightweight, low cost, and low maintenance and it provides a good grip on the mat. As the number of yogis around the world continues to grow, the demand for cheaper and better mats is also increasing.

Using PVC as the primary material for yoga mats has enabled the company to achieve this goal, earning millions of dollars per year (most of which is mass produced overseas in China).

Versatility is another reason why this is a popular choice of material. Moulding it into any size, shape and thickness provides consumers with a wide range of options. Mixing it with other materials also allows manufacturers to play with its spongy and sticky properties.

As PVC yoga mats are made from plastic, they are highly abrasion resistant and their smooth texture and good grip provide practitioners with better performance and alignment when changing and holding poses.

PVC yoga mats are easy to clean, requiring only soap and water before a quick rinse. This is probably the reason why most yoga studios prefer them to more textured mats, which may require extra care and attention when cleaning.

However, plastic yoga mats are prone to wear and tear and need to be replaced frequently. Often, the spot where your feet are in downward dog position is where the mat starts to disintegrate and pieces of the plastic mat start to fall onto your clothes and the floor.

Are yoga mats toxic?
